UK rap, also known as British hip hop or Brit-hop, is a genre and culture encompassing various styles of hip hop music made in the United Kingdom. Initially influenced by Jamaican dub and toasting in the 1950s-70s, British hip hop evolved to include elements of grime, jungle, and UK garage. The scene began in the 1980s, with artists initially emulating American hip hop before developing a unique British style incorporating Ragga influences and native accents. By the 1990s, Britcore emerged, characterized by a denser, more aggressive style and the use of Caribbean patois.
