Genre:

Rhythm and blues

Rhythm and blues, abbreviated as R&B, is a popular music genre that originated in African-American communities in the 1940s. Initially used as a marketing term by record companies, it described music with a heavy, insistent beat. Typical bands from the 1950s to the 1970s included piano, guitars, bass, drums, saxophones, and background vocalists. R&B lyrics often reflect African-American experiences, addressing themes such as pain, freedom, joy, societal racism, oppression, and personal aspirations. The genre influenced rock and roll and evolved into soul in the late 1960s, while "R&B" continued as a term for urban music.
