New beat is a Belgian electronic dance music genre that emerged in the late 1980s in Western Europe. It combines elements of new wave, hi-NRG, EBM, and hip hop (e.g., scratching). The genre gave rise to a subgenre called "hard beat", which blends EBM, new beat, and acid house. New beat also significantly influenced later European dance styles, including Belgian techno, hardcore techno, and gabber.
