Minimal wave

Minimal wave is a genre encompassing obscure, atypical examples of new wave, stripped-down electronic music, synth-pop, post-punk, and coldwave. It focuses on pre-MIDI electronic instrumentation and themes of sincere detachment. The term was coined retrospectively and refers to the most electronic and minimal forms of these genres, sometimes called minimal synth or synth wave.
