Funktronica is a subgenre of electronic music that emerged in Eastern North America around the early 2000s. It combines elements of synth funk and Italo-disco, often featuring slightly faster tempos than nu-disco and a less melodic structure. Characterized by the use of samplers, sequencers, electric bass guitar played with the slap technique, talkbox, vocoder, electric guitar, keyboards, and synthesizers, funktronica typically employs a simple 4-beat drum pattern with a kick-snare-kick-snare sequence. The genre's rhythms are often driven by funky bass lines, with minimal use of ride cymbals, creating a fusion of digital and analog sounds.
