Genre:

Funk carioca

Funk carioca, also known as favela funk or baile funk, is a Brazilian music genre that emerged in the 1980s in Rio de Janeiro. It blends Miami bass and gangsta rap influences and is distinct from American funk. Originally popular in Rio, it gained national prominence in the 2000s, diversifying into various regional styles. São Paulo became a leading force in the genre during the 2010s. Despite its name, "baile funk" refers to the parties where the music is played, not the genre itself. Funk carioca remains a significant part of Brazil's working-class culture.
